Environmental Design Study (from concept to render)
Tools: PS, Unreal Engine, Nuke, Blender
A study piece to get my hands on Blender and Unreal Engine. The foreground (grass and water) is rendered in Unreal Engine, while the mid to background are mattepainted and projected onto assets I roughly modelled in Blender. The assets are generally used for perspective guidance. The cliffs in the final shot are all mattepainted and projected in Nuke.
Although 90% of the time was technical trouble shooting, and 10% of it was really being artistically free (cons of self-learning...), I had fun combining 3D and 2D elements to finish this piece and learn on the go.
Sharing below is the original concept and design proccess:
Original concept art
Some thumbs during the design process, in the end picking the trundra cliffs in the middle to try and bring it to life.
Assets I roughly modelled in Blender. They didn’t need to be this detailed for projection in Nuke, but I want to try out the remesh and sculpting features in Blender.
Lake water and foreground grass simulated and rendered in Unreal Engine. I wanted the grass to have a blade look as my concept, so I modelled the grass assets in Blender, and add that to the foliage system in Unreal Engine.
Below is the breakdown of the projection done in Nuke.
